Elvira's Kitchen was a book of recipes published in the mid Fourth Age.

History

The book was published mid-Age, slightly before the dissolution of the Altronis Corpocracy, and purported to represent the favorite foods of Elvira Grimshaw, co-leader of the Dark Order. Its authenticity remains in doubt, not least because most of the Dark Order operated only in secret, and the recipes themselves are inconsistent with the cuisines of the period.

Contents

Elvira's Kitchen contains a series of recipes, related in a conversational tone, as if by a casual collector of recipes to friends and neighbors. Typical items include:

  • mushroom pie,
  • worms in spaghetti,
  • squab on the job,
  • vulture pie,
  • giblet jam,
  • mackerel's eyes in jelly,
  • candied insects,
  • eyeball soup,
  • chilled monkey heads,
  • crab juice,
  • squid in its own ink,
  • cervelles braisees avec les oeufs brouilles,
  • fried deer testicles,
  • preserved pigs' ears,
  • shark-fin soup,
  • frog legs (and other frog organs),
  • haggis,
  • maggotty cheese,
  • eel pies,
  • tadpole soup,
  • fried crickets,
  • beef tartare,
  • clam-and-peas sandwiches,
  • spider pie,
  • stuffed capsicum,
  • lime gelatin marshmallow cottage cheese surprise,
  • sweetbreads,
  • creamed chipped beef on toast,

and 'every part of the hog except the squeal', to name a few.

Controversy

Questions arose over whether Elvira Grimshaw ever did anything so normal as eating, and if so, whether she ate any of the items in the book, or had anything to do with the writing of it. Those who knew best alleged her to live on the 'elixirs of life' favored by all the Dark Order.
