MPMTB, short for "Metal Prototype, Multi-Technology Test Bed" is the term used by the Foundation to refer to experimental ships. the Alliance Space Commission allows such vessels to operate without formal registration so long as they do so outside the major shipping regions. MPMTBs are not usually formally commissioned and typically not operated far from their development centers or without escorts. If the ship does go in to mass production without major design changes, the prototype may receive a formal registration and become the line-leader for the new class. In most cases, only a hull-number is issued according to a five-letter slip-ID and design revision code.

MPMTBs are sometimes built as part of a Fleet Revision but are most often constructed as stand-alone protects or technology-demonstrators. The key difference is they are constructed with the intention to test new technologies or innovations, not as production-prototypes.
