Selkie are a race of mystical creatures who are amphibious and largely live underwater. While not actual shape-shifters, their forms are very malleable, giving them good swimming characteristics as well as being bipedal. While they typically live in shallow water, they can dive quite deeply.

Physical Description

Largely bipedal with slender arms and legs. They seldom reach more than six feet in length and most are considerably smaller than an average human. They have long arms and legs, and swim primarily with arm motions and by using their feet and legs like flipeprs. They are often confused with Mermaids, and indeed have some overlap. The skin of a selkie is covered in dark, very fine hairs.

They can breath both air and water, but do not survive well on land. Their skin must be kept wet, and they can very easily die from dehydration. They require very clean water to live in, and are badly affected by industrial pollutants.

Regions

Selkie are primarily found in the Brutish Sea, and have population centers around the shores of Modia. The Gudersnipe Foundation, who controls that region, have strictly-enforced recreational and commercial boating regulations to protect Selkie habitats and populations. Selkie were once much more common along the Sword Coast and around Korrinth, but as modern technology became common in the region, their populations dwindled.

The largest Selkie population is in northern Modia, at Grakest Bay, where an entire city flourishes with a population into the millions. The region is shared with a human city along the shores, and is a popular tourist destination for both races.

Culture

The Selkie are primarily farmers, cultivating a variety of plants and breeding animals. They use animals for both work and food, having created many unique breeds. Food is never stored: they rely on plants which need not die to be harvested, and kill livestock as needed. Most food is consumed raw, but in regions where trade with human cultures is possible, cooked food is a popular delicacy. Sharks take on the role of dogs in Selkie culture, with shows being a common form of entertainment.

Selkie do not traditionally wear clothing, only belts and other items from which to hang tools and weapons. When interacting with humans, they will don minimalist outfits; and in Grakest, the 'sponge suit' is a common sight to extend the time they can remain on land. They do not travel much as maintaining a steady food supply requires a certain amount of sedation, though they can live off the sea if needed.
