"Toss-up" is a commonplace saying, meaning "a choice between equal alternatives, made only by unaffected chance";–– the latter represented, in the saying itself, by the toss of a coin, wherein each face represents an alternative, and its uppermost face (upon landing) the alternative preferred. Variations of this method use dice; sticks; seeds; bones; and in face, any small object easily thrown and counted. Under the name of 'Cleromancy', this is a divinative practice, held in various degrees of respect and contempt by different societies.
