Formally classified as a scout-ship, the George Washington was constructed as a test-platform for advanced shielding technologies. Often described as "a shield generator with an engine, maybe", it was the only production-class vessel-mounted defense system able to take a direct barrage from a battery ship.

Though classed as a scout-ship, Gearoge Washington-class vessels were primarily used in fleet-operations. Virtually impenetrable, they could fly safely within enemy formations and carry out scans, collectively valuable intelligence. Even within formation, their ability to withstand any attack allowed them to use active-scanners at all times, while most capitol ships had to use passive systems in order to evade detection.

Many of the Washington's advancements were made by studying function-data from the G.S.S. Saratoga, including larger-than-average shield generators and marry-go-round transformers.

The Enterprise Incident

Schematics and parts were stolen from various shipyards, allowing the Alliance to build their own version of the ship. The Foundation, more than a little unhappy about the theft, demanded the ship's return, nearly bringing the two nations to war. After an extensive investigation it was determined that the Alliance could not continue to construct George Washington-class ships due to technological limitations, and the matter was dropped.
