IDF World

The story-world for this novel is a fairly generic pulp science fiction universe. Spaceships exist and are affordable, replicators, transporters. Its not a direct rip from star trek, but there is not a lot of depth. I will still develop the world extensively and may write other stories in it's continuity.

One thing is the presence of "jump gates" large rings that allow ships to travel great distances almost instantly. Our heroes ship is capable of FTL by itself, but the gates are the only way to travel very far very fast.

Its heavily implied that Ivan and Terrance are the only humans in the universe. Part of the implication is that this really is the Ivan and Terrence from the Development web comic, who got a spaceship somehow and left earth behind to seek adventure.

Transporters

They're beaming technology is somewhat limited. To beam down to a planet they have to be in low orbit, and it takes minutes to calculate everything. You can't just "call for a beam-out" and get it. It is also established that every time they use the transporter to leave a planet surface, they have to employ a non-re-usable beacon.

Jump Gate

Jump gates are massive portals in space that ships can fly through to travel great distances very rapidly. Like, jumping accross kind of distances.

Spaceship

Our heroes spaceship is named "Beowulf". She is not "the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy", nor is she the fastest in the quadrant. She is, however, a hunk of junk. Seriously, pieces fall off sometimes.

The craft has 4 engines for sublight and a hyper drive, but they mostly use jump gates to get around because their hyper drive isn't very good. They also have some sort of small detachable shuttle and escape pods.
