The Power Buffer is an energy storage and conditioning system used aboard Foundation and some other ships. The exact technology varies by operators. In the case of the Foundation, the buffer is comprised of a massive, shaped piece containing a crystaline matrix of Substance 200. This material acts like a capacitor or battery, with several points for electircal power incress and egress. The buffer itself is surrounded by many layers of shielding and insulation.

Most buffers have very unusual shapes. The advent of Substance 200 as a storage medium places no limitations on the buffer's size or arrangement; there is no efficient shape. For this reason, buffer designs are usually engineered to consume all available space and can have very bizarre geometry.
