Ritual Sacrifice

In Magic, a spell that calls for a sacrifice can often be replaced with a ritual sacrifice. This is done as a sort of play, in which a 'victim' is taken through a dramatization of an actual sacrifice, without any blood actually being spilt. Ritual sacrifices were an important advancement in magic, as it allowed powerful spells to be cast without resorting to such extreme measures. Any spell that required a sacrifice was always more powerful of the victim was human, and with rituals a willing human could always be found(local theater troops were an especially potent source of 'victims').

The term can also be applied to non-magic rituals in which a victim play-acts at being killed.
