The Unicorns are a species of Mystical Creature from the Course Books.

A group of unicorns is called a herd. They typically live in forests though were originaly native to open plains. Since the dark times, unicorns have been hunted for their horns, which are called alicorns.

Like dragons, unicorns have a Genetic Memory; but every unicorn is born with the lifetime experiences of every unicorn before it, until its own birth.

Though there are numerous herds spread throughout the Known Worlds, any individual can move between the herds at will.

The unicorns are led, to some degree, by a king, who possesses great magical signficance. His horn is called the Sepilcorn and represents the 'soul' of all unicorns.

Appearance

Unicorns often appear as a dazzling white horse with a long golden horn. This is an appearance created by enchantment, and they actually look like any other horse, but with the addition of a simple chitinous horn.

Unicorns began using the enchanted form sometime during the Mage Wars and is most commonly believed their true form. Because the horn does not look in reality as it does on the enchanted unicorns, many true alicorns are mistaken for false ones.

History

Uncorns were probably created along with the dragons and were likely not uncommon during Antiquity. In the Age of Darkness they were hunted for their horns, and the Unicorn King's horn was taken sometime around B.G.A. 2000.

Problem

One day you are out frolicking and, to your utter amazement, you stumble upon a hidden colony of unicorns. Finding the species surprisingly trusting toward humans, it is naturally easy for you, as a scientist, to acquire one and “study” it. After grinding its remains into a thick paste, you are able to extract out a unique compound, which you label 'U'. By reacting U with carbon dioxide, you find you can generate large amounts of pyruvate (P). Unfortunately, U also has a competing reaction with 2 carbon dioxides that also generates a useless compound, Q. The following rate laws are found:

Assuming you start with [U] = .5 M and [CO2] = .9M (don’t think too hard about how you dissolved the gas that well), find the rate of production of pyruvate.
