Hakens Guard is an enchanted shield from the Mage Wars. The name possibly refers to several similar shields or possibly denotes a type of shield. In all cases the behavior of the shield is described as being the same. When left alone, the object weighs thousands of pounds. But when paired with a special enchanted ring or amulet(accounts disagree), it becomes nearly weightless.

What makes the Hakens Guard especially fearsome, however, is the way the mass changes. When a wielder is holding it, it always feels very light and easy to move. To everyone else, it weighs as much as it weighs. This makes it extremely powerful for blocking, but even more devastation when used in a shield-bash.

Examples

Arden Song has an artifact they claim to be the original Hakens Guard as part of their collection in the Arsenal of Freedom. Their shield is missing the required secondary artifact to make it function correctly, and weighs four tons.

Based on an analysis of available accounts, as many as 17 shields with the same properties survived the Mage Wars, and hundreds, possibly even thousands of such shields existed at one time.
