Harmachis

The Harmachis is(or most likely was) a species of Mystical Creature once native to Aren. Harmachis were enormous, averaging 100 feet tall, and possessing a human-like head, the body of a lion, and the wings of a bird. Their bodies were said to be metalic, made mostly of a platinum-like material, with hair and feathers made of gold. Harmachis were thought to be very long-lived, with lifespans in excess of fourteen thousand years. Their magical power was said to be very great, often described as god-like, such that only the most powerful dragon sorcerers could face them.

According to tradition, Harmachis were common in Antiquity, but sometime during the Age of Darkness they fought a great war against the dragons. The dragons were clearly the victors in that war, and hold that Harmachis were the aggressors.

Harmachis were thought to be widespread, but the only-known population center for them is in Obwalla, where ruins of some temples can be found. Very little concrete information exists on the Harmachis; conventional wisdom holds that they were extinct by the start of the Mage Wars, but many accounts exist of adventurers encountering them. Since Harmachis are long-lived, any that did survive the war with the dragons could conceivably still exist.
