Hyperspace window generator

A Satyaran-invented system for faster-than-light propulsion, the hyperspace windows generator would have been smaller, lighter, and faster than the traditional Python Reactor in use throughout the Known Worlds. Had the hyperspace window technology worked, it may have revolutionized inter-stellar propulsion.

As a propulsion method, it was a miserable failure. In simplest terms, the device was just as likely to send you a thousand light years as it was to send you one. A series of experiments conducted by the Saratoga determined that nearly everything affected the system, and the variables were far too many to measure and control.

Adapted to use as a weapon, the drive became a rousing success. Rian Wildfire built a torpedo that included a scaled-down hyperspace window generator capable of exactly one transit. Through the experiments conducted, he had determined its effective range was only a few miles. Useless as an inter-stellar propulsion system, but quite a treat for passing through enemy shields and armor.

What Rian had invented was a weapon capable of going straight through the shields and hull of a ship, and hitting it from the inside. Though counter-measures were eventually perfected, the Fireball, as he called it, was a devastating weapon indeed. Joshua Jusenkyou later expanded the weapon's range to several hundred thousand miles, and built an entire starship based around the technology.
