Ring On

Ring On is the name of a Flat Dimension on The Inner Rim in an adjacent Domain to Aren. Despite this locality it is challenging to reach magically and is not accessed via the GATE. The Foundation provides no comment as to why transit is not provided. Because of the difficulties in traveling to Ring On, the nature of the dimension and its history are not well-understood, nor is the nature of its physics-defying composition.

The following is based largely on anecdotal reports from travelers who have visited the dimension. No scientific study has ever been conducted there, even by travelers with an understanding of modern science.

Ring On has no actual surface, the air thins above a certain altitude and thickens below a certain level. Otherwise, there is a nearly uniform column of air 500 miles thick. In this space, floating islands, some the size of continents, can be found. Rivers, lakes, trees, and even people live on these islands. Some are stationary, others move in unpredictable paths but never impact each other.

Presumably, Ring On has a defined edge, though it has not been mapped. The region near the bottom is described as "Aether" but presumably has no connection to the Aether between worlds. The region around the top is similar to the top of any normal atmosphere, with a gradual falloff in air pressure presumably until it becomes a vacuum. Within the column, air pressure varies but remains around an average of 1 bar.

Gravity is also supposed to not function normally in Ring On. On a small scale, involving people-sized objects, it behaves roughly the same as normally. But on a larger scale the enormous chunks of rock (some of which should weigh as much as a small moon) do not appear to exert gravitational pull. Further, some of the flying fauna should not be able to move.

Of the fauna, there exist two creatures in particular: a sort of flying turtle and enormous whale-like animal, of which both are able to fly through the air as if it were water, floating inexplicably. These animals lack wings or any other visible means of flight. Further, their enormous sizes would indicate they should be crushed in normal gravity. As with the other issues of Ring On, no direct scientific observation has ever been made.

Another observation is that it seems peculiarly simple to slow the fall of objects. A dropped object will very quickly accelerate to terminal velocity, but can be slowed with much less energy than should be necessary. Humans who live on Ring On routinely travel between islands using small, simple parachute-like devices or by gliding with improvised wings. In a similar fashion, a wing-shape creates much more lift than should be possible, making powered flight much easier. Means of producing lighter-than-air flight are similarly more efficient than the laws of physics dictate.

Theories

It has been speculated that Ring On may in fact be the Plane of Wind as described by Auromancy, and is thus the source of power for wind-based elemental magic. The auramancers speculate that the odd observations in physics are the result of naturally-available sources of very pure magic.

This theory is complicated somewhat by the existence of the Astral Plane, which can be visited but does not natively support life as we know it. Where as Ring On has a wide variety of native and exotic flora and fauna, the Astral Plane does not have a physical component. If the further theory that the physical realm is the Plane of Earth were proven to be true, it would indicate life can exist only on the one plane.

This is of course largely conjecture and hotly debated amongst magical scholars.
