The Monster Gods are the universal deities of the Course Books. They are mentioned most notably in The Book of Lore and were said to walk the earth during the Mythical Age. The exact number and status of them is unknown; some accounts claim there were hundreds, others say only four.

Nature and Culture

Much like the Dark Lords, the nature of the Monster Gods is said to be beyond human comprehension. They are known throughout myth and legend as powerful forces for good, opposing all evil, and equipping the mortal races with tools and teachings to combat the forces of darkness. The Monster gods are universally aligned with light and goodness.

Rôles

The Monster Gods are accredited with having created most (if not all) of the Known Worlds; represented Light and Good in the Mythical Age; and have been variously worshipped, venerated, remembered, or feared by most civilized species, ever since; but seldom seen. Their exact numbers, names, and attributes are never fully revealed: they are sometimes said to be four in number, to correspond with the four magical 'elements' of Earth, Fire, Wind, and Water; but sometimes implied to exceed that number, by far. The One King is the highest-ranked among them; but he is only one of Four Kings, who seem to rule the realms of the gods. Superior even to these, is White Blaze.

Psuedogods

Numerous beings identified throughout history have often been described as being, if not equal to, on a level near that of the Monster Gods. Most noted among them is The Broodmother, who with the help of the One King created all dragons. The Dracosages are beings who, while born mortal, attained such great wisdom and power in life that they were granted immortality, thus approaching the power of the Broodmother.

Draco, the dragon-mage who created the Slayer Dragons, is believed to be "near" the dracosages in sheer power, though he died mortal. Lelerough, Destroyer of Worlds is often worshipped as a goddess.

Monster God Rucalia, King of Chance, is mentioned in myth, but it is believed to be a very powerful mortal being that ascended to near god-hood, possibly during the Mythical Age (though some sources place Rucalia shortly before the Mage Wars). Rucalia left behind a sword called The Kiss of Ruthia, which grants its owner great luck. It is unknown if the modern sword is the original or a Mage Wars-era copy.

Selena Golrig, Chester Rumbarahl, King Arthur, the Dragon of the Setting Sun, and the symbol of the Ninjas' culture are also taken as gods. In fact, any hero can be.
