Gailen Fleet Revision

The Gailen Fleet Revision was technically begun in A.Y. 6901 and was largely thought uneccessary as the Hyden Fleet Revision had taken place only a year eary and produced several servicable warships. However, Instructor Gailen, who oversaw the revision was considered very influential and essentially given a blank check.

Ships of the Revision

The Gailen Revision produced only three starships:

Design Briefs

The Gailen Revision ships are best described as "revolutionary", though Gailen himself preferred the term "whimsically inventive".

Sahar-Class

The Sahar Class Carrier was designed to be a battle group unto itself. The intention was to build a single, massive, multi-roll ship that could more easily be mass-produced. Gailen's design team made major advancements in propulsion, power distribution, and arrangement. The ship could launch fighters, bombers, corvettes, and even the first in a new line of fast-attack gunship that was heavier than a corvette but lighter than a cutter. While a battle group unto itself, the Sahar-class was deisigned to be supported by a series of destroyers and cruisers.

Victory-Class

The Victory was effectively designed as a direct copy of the Saratoga, while incorporating all of the advancments and design changes Hunter made during the ship's service. Armed to the teeth and crewed by soldiers trained specifically in their operation, the light destroyers were perhaps more formidable than the carrier they served.

Hudson-Class

The Hudson saw the fewest Gailen-influences of the revision, and was meant more as a soak/missile cruiser than a standard battery ship. It's basic design and hull geometry made it better suited to surviving in a high-thread environment, but its lack of armament made it a very poor contender.

That was, until, it's remarkable engine arrangement had a chance to shine. Typically speaking, a ship will have it's engines arranged back-to-front, with most ships using standard 100/100 engines(engines capable of thrusting at 100% in both forward and reverse orientations. The G.S.S. Hudson had these, as well as four additional engines arranged at 45% angle off the center line. With these being just as powerful as the main engines, it meant the ship could quickly change directions without having to re-orient itself. Completely unheard of in capitol ship design, this capability allowed it to manuver much closer to enemy targets while still remaining agile enough to avoid much of the enemy fire.

Delivering a payload of missiles and torpedoes(which typically have a shorter effective range than directed energy weapons), the Hudson could easily deal enough damage to make up for it's lack of battery guns. Finally, the ship was also equiped with AP Cannons, devastating at close-range.

Aurora-Class

During the course of the Revision, the Foundation demanded that Gailen design at least one battery ship with movable charged-particle cannons so that traditional fleet tactics would not have to be abandoned all together. The only specification provided was that it include at minimum eight guns. Traditionally, this would require the use of a long hull design and 2-4 large turrets.

Gailen effectively took their requirements and spat on them, instead designing a ship which housed all eight cannons in a common structure, housed along the center line of the ship. This single "turret" would have a single fire-control room, and was designed to launch a full volley at a single target(traditional battery ships could attack multiple targets). The Aurora design gave the ship some ability to to independently aim the entire eight-gun pack, but relied largely on maneuvering the entire ship in order to fire.

The gun platform was then mounted on a hull design similar to the Sahar, and using the same engine systems and configuration. This gave the ship a top speed of 70PSL and manuverability unheard of in a capitol ship. Further, the Aurora was equiped with two more massive fixed-forward-facing hybrid cannons as well as four AP-cannons. Her high speed, high maneuverability, and variety of devastating yet independent armaments gave the ship a sizable edge.

In combat simulations, the Aurora design faired substantially better than traditional battery ships, and only lost out due to it's inability to engage multiple targets. However, Gailen pointed out that as a battery ship, its primary roll was to attack singular, high-value targets, and that it could do so with dramatic

History of Revision

The initial stage of the revision produced only one warship, the G-001-001 Sahar Jusenkyou, a Sahar Jusenkyou-Class Carrier. An entirely new birth had to be constructed at Utopia Gregaria to accommodate construction of the ship, so production was slow, even with the advent of Modular Technology developed during the Hydren Revision.

Despite the initial success and popularity of the Sahar, the Gailen Revision was put on hold while Instructor Gailen devoted his time to more pressing matters. He would not be able to return to it until the Long Night.

With resources very scarce and only facilities available in the School Proper at his disposal, Gailen did not have the ability to construct any metal prototypes. He did, however, have the luxury of an extremely long design-stage and had time for extensive testing of virtual prototypes. This is why all ships in the Gailen Revision have no letter-type in their registry numbers: each original design was considered a success(Letters are only added after successive metal prototypes).

Though several G-002's and G-003's would be constructed for the Battle of the New Day, the Gailen Fleet Revision did not officially pick up again until N.D. 7, when reconstruction of the fleet began. Gailen's designs were chosen because they were each multi-role ships, and allowed just four hull-designs to fullfill every niche of a battle group. This would normally require 6-8 separate hull designs, depending on the needs of the battle group. The Sahar-class carrier was able to support Harpys and Gargoyles, as well as Corvettes, thus replacing three separate carrier-types with one. The Victory-class destroyer was maneuverable enough and fast enough to effectively fill the roles of both destroyer and cutter, while packing as much fire power as a cruiser. The Hudson-class heavy cruiser was more of a light battlecruiser, and like it's smaller cousin, the Victory, it had as much firepower as a standard battlecruiser. Finally, the Sahar herself, as a duel-role warship, had as much firepower and armor as a battleship but was still a highly-effective carrier.

The revision was extremely unique in that only four models, design revisions, prototypes, and final production-model vessels were created. All three ships were easily approved and went into production, however few were commissioned before the end of the Long Night. Following that, the Gailen revision quickly became the standard and plans were made to rebuild the entire fleet before a new design revision was to be considered.

Variants

The G-004-0005 G.S.S. Remora was a cargo ship designed to look exactly like the Sahar. Externally(and more importantly, on sensors) it was indistinguishable from the G-001-0001. The bulk of the central hull was actually completely empty and could be filled with modular cargo containers. Adding two or three of these to a battle group gave the appearance that it was much stronger than it was. Additionally, the Remora still sported working AP-cannons and all of Sahar's close-in armaments. It could, if the need arose, fight very effectively.

The G-001-0001-A, named G.S.S. Sahar, is officially classified as a variant, though unofficially considered a Sahar-class ship. The hangars on the under side are replaced with a full-featured stardock, capable of enclosing any ship in the fleet besides the Aurora. This is more in line with Gailen's initial vision for the Sahar, as a "mini mother-ship" capable of preforming underway repairs on smaller ships, or even building new ones of the need arose. The Sahar and the Sahar Jusenkyou use over 80% common parts and design.

Later Additions

Due to the small size of the revision, other small ships were still required for various niche roles. Though not initially included in the Revision, these vessels were asigned to it, and borrowed many common elements. Gailen also wished to develop "A new Mothership" for the fleet, one that could accomodate his new, larger ships, and simply to replace the now 10,000-year-old vessels in operation. If he was given permission to design and construct these ships, it would have been under extreme secrecy.
